The Prime Minister hailed a “fantastic moment” for the country after embarking on the historic agreement that paves the way for the UK`s exit from the European Union next Friday. Moreover, according to Von der Leyen, Britain is sweeping away its reputation by failing to comply with an agreement signed in December. The European Parliament is expected to approve any trade deal and the chairman of the largest legislative group has said that any deal with EU lawmakers would have no chance if the UK only complied with the smallest paragraph of the Brexit deal. The withdrawal agreement also contains provisions for the United Kingdom to leave the Convention setting the status of European schools, with the United Kingdom bound by the Convention and accompanying regulations on accredited European schools until the end of the last academic year of the transition period, i.e. at the end of the spring semester 2020-2021. The reception of the agreement in the House of Commons ranged from cold to hostile, and the vote was delayed by more than a month. Prime Minister May has received a motion of no confidence within her own party, but the EU has refused to accept further changes. The European Parliament`s Constitutional Affairs Committee backed the agreement on Thursday by 23 votes to 3 and launched the final act next week in a plenary session of the European Parliament on ratification of the agreement. Under the agreement, the UK will leave the EU at midnight Central European time on 31 January. The UK will remain in the EU internal market and customs union until the end of 2020, but none of the decision-making bodies are in place. On the European Union side, the European Parliament also approved the ratification of the agreement on 29 January 2020 and the Council of the European Union approved the conclusion of the agreement by e-mail on 30 January 2020.  That is why, on 30 January 2020, the European Union also tabled its instrument for ratification of the agreement, concluding the agreement and allowing it to enter into force on the date of the UK`s withdrawal from the EU on 31 January 2020, at 11 .m GMT. After an unprecedented vote on 4 December 2018, MEPs ruled that the UK government was not respecting Parliament because it refused to give Parliament full legal advice on the consequences of its proposed withdrawal terms.  The focus of the consultation was on the legal effect of the “backstop” agreement for Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom with regard to the customs border between the EU and the United Kingdom and its consequences on the Good Friday agreement which ended the unrest in Northern Ireland, including whether the UK would be assured, in accordance with the proposals, of being able to leave the EU in a practical sense.
